Chacchoben Mayan Ruins

The official INAH entry ticket is 95 Mexican Pesos. Children under 13, Mexican seniors, and Mexican students with valid ID enter free. Bring exact cash in pesos, as foreign cards often get declined when the park satellite link drops.

You cannot climb the main faces of Temple 24 or the Twin Temples on the upper plaza. Visitors can walk up the broad modern access stairs to reach the Gran Basamento platform, which gives a sweeping elevated view across the structures.

Tulum sits on sea cliffs under direct sun with massive crowds and strict roped barriers. Chacchoben is quieter, surrounded by mature jungle that blocks the heat, and offers a much better chance of spotting wildlife like toucans and monkeys.

Most people spend between 90 minutes and 2 hours walking the loops at a leisurely pace. Add an extra 30 minutes if you hire a guide or stop for a cold drink at the entrance palapa.

Taxis rarely wait in the parking lot for casual fares. If you take a cab from Mahahual, negotiate a round-trip rate that includes having your driver wait in the shade for two hours while you explore.

Because the ruins sit inside old jungle, mosquitoes can be thick, especially from June to October or after morning rain. Apply DEET or picaridin repellent before you hit the trail, and wear lightweight long pants if you have sensitive skin.

There are no official lockers or formal bag drops at the gate. If you are traveling between hotels with luggage, keep your bags locked out of sight in your rental car trunk in the monitored parking area.
